How to Mix Styles and Maintain a Cohesive Design

When you’re in the middle of making design choices, it’s totally normal for doubt to creep in. You might find yourself thinking, “Is this all going to look good together?” Whether you’re mixing styles or trying to keep a cohesive look, that question can slow you down. But here’s the good news: I’m going to teach you a designer’s mindset so you can move past the doubt and confidently pull together a beautifully cohesive design—even if you love mixing styles!

Step 1: Start with a Mood Board

One of my favorite tools for keeping everything in harmony is a mood board. It’s simple, visual, and incredibly effective for seeing your design come together. I like to use Canva for this. Here’s what to do:

Create a separate page for each of these categories:

  • Color Palette
  • Metal Finishes
  • Wood Tones
  • Lighting
  • Tiles
  • Exterior Ideas

Step 2: Choose a Style for Each Category

Now that you have your categories set, it’s time to start building out each page. Think of each one as a mini design guide. Pick a favorite style or theme that aligns with your vision. For example, if your favorite design styles are modern, rustic, and traditional, you might create something like this:

  • Lighting – Modern fixtures
  • Wood Tones – Rustic, warm woods
  • Tiles – Traditional patterns or colors

This approach lets you mix styles in a way that still feels cohesive. You’re giving each category a purpose and staying focused on your overall look.

Step 3: Use Your Mood Board as a Guide

Whenever it’s time to make a new selection, pull up your mood board to check your ideas. Ask yourself:

  • “Does this bathroom tile fit the theme I’ve created for tiles?”
  • “Will this kitchen faucet blend well with the other metal finishes?”

You can even add in images of your selections as you go to keep everything on track visually. This way, you’ll always have a reference point, which makes it easier to stay consistent and avoid second-guessing.
