REFINE STUDIOS DESIGN PILLAR: Aesthetic

Week by week we’ve been taking you all through the design pillars here at Refine Studios. We use these pillars as the basis for curating our client’s designs to fit their needs for their space!

YOUR ENVIRONMENT MATTERS: Aesthetic

Week by week we’ve been taking you all through the design pillars here at Refine Studios. We use these pillars as the basis for curating our client’s designs to fit their needs for their space! No two clients are the same and everything from the people, flow, sound, lighting, and much more impact a space. Using these ten pillars as the guidelines really ensures that we are transforming a house into a home for our clients so that they’ll be excited to walk in the door. Today we’re sharing all about our Aesthetic design pillar.

When we first sit down with a client, we ask them what their aesthetic is. This is usually the hardest part for them. It’s hard to describe your personal style, if you haven’t taken the time to think about it.

We usually try to break it down by asking questions like:

  • What colors are you drawn to?

  • Do you like light or dark wood tones?

  • Do you like clean lines or more traditional designs?

  • Are there any styles you don’t like?

We also love to have clients share their Pinterest boards with us, that gives us a great insight into what they are looking for.

A lot of designers only design (and are known for) one specific style or aesthetic. We like to take the focus off of us and design for the client. We pride ourselves on the home feeling like you and less like Refine Studios. That’s why you will see that we design across many different styles- from modern and mid-century to classic traditional and everything in between.

Of course within our own team we all have our own favorite styles, so we decided it would be fun to put together a mood board that shows each of our own personalities!

Take a Look at Our Mood Boards

Charity Scott | Owner + Designer:

I’m a lover of all design styles. I can point out and appreciate certain aspects of almost every design style but when designing for myself I usually tend to go pretty modern. I love neutral colors with hints of warm earthy tones, a lot of texture, and statement lighting. I would consider my style to be informal and casual but one thing I recently noticed about myself is my love for symmetry. Symmetry is so satisfying to me but it does give off a more polished look so it’s all about achieving that symmetry while still feeling casual.

Casey | Project Manager:

I would say my style is a mix of Vintage California Surf and Mid-Century. I love to have fun with color while keeping most of the main materials minimal and neutral. We have three small children in our home and I want our space to feel fun and joyful. We don’t take our home design too seriously, anything goes as long as it makes us happy!

Jada | Interior Detailer:

Working in design I feel like my style is always shifting (designing my own house someday is going to be a nightmare), but I think consistently I lean more towards Mid-Century and Art-Deco. Modern and funky but not ignoring ordinate details. Lots of wood tones, neutrals and pops of brighter colors. I’m inspired by things like old Palm Springs architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright’s work, Post-Modern design ideas, or anything that feels fun and/ or has history.

Kaitlynn | Design Assistant:

When someone asks me what my style is it’s always difficult for me to answer because there are so many different designs and styles that I love. It’s even hard for me to buy items for myself because I like so many different things. I have found that using some of the same colors, patterns, and materials within your items really gives you the ability to mix and match any kind of style!
