YOUR ENVIRONMENT MATTERS: Nature

Week by week we’ve been taking you all through the design pillars here at Refine Studios. We use these pillars as the basis for curating our client’s designs to fit their needs for their space! No two clients are the same and everything from the people, flow, sound, lighting, and much more impact a space. Using these ten pillars as the guidelines really ensures that we are transforming a house into a home for our clients so that they’ll be excited to walk in the door. Today we’re sharing all about our Nature design pillar.

Nature plays an important role in each space we design. Bringing nature inside can really liven up a room. The first natural element most people think to add is a plant, and we are all for that, but we also like to take it a step further!

You can start thinking about bringing nature in from your first few design selections. We like to start with windows- using large picture windows can bring in a lot of natural light and highlight an amazing view. Once we move on to material selections, think about bringing in wood tones and natural texture with stone tiles. You can even achieve a lot with the paint colors you choose. We love using greens and darker warm browns to bring in natural depth.

Take a look below to get a few ideas on incorporating nature into your space from our team.

Charity Scott | Owner + Designer:

The easiest way to bring nature into any space, old or new, is with real plants. It’s one of those things where you don’t really know what’s missing until it’s there! I’ve seen the impact of adding plants to a space and I am amazed every time. It adds that finishing touch that brings so much personality into the room. That being said, it’s important to know what plants are right for your space not just based on the plants sunlight requirements but also what shape works best for the spot it’s going in.

Casey | Project Manager:

I feel like no room is complete without a plant! I make sure each room in my home has a few plants, with varying shades of green- it really breathes some life into the space! I also love adding a balance of varied wood tones and textures into each room. We have light wood floors, so a dark rich piece of wood can really create some nice natural contrast. I also love adding natural movement with countertops, I feel like that can take a modern kitchen to the next level.

Jada | Interior Detailer:

I’m definitely a plant-mom, I try to add plants to each room that gets decent sunlight. Even adding a tall fake plant to my more shaded wall-facing desk helps cheer up the area! Other than that I love adding natural textures like wood and ceramics to my place, whether that’s a wood furniture piece or natural toned ceramic trays and pots. I try to get fresh flowers for our dining table as often as I can, in my mind it makes our tucked away kitchen feel more bright and fun.

Kaitlynn | Design Assistant:

As much as I wish I was like the rest of the team with a green thumb I’m not- If I even look in a plant’s direction it will die. However, I do love the look and feel of having plants in my space so I tend to lean towards “realistic” looking plants. Another way I like to incorporate nature into my space is by using natural materials in my furniture and decor.
