YOUR ENVIRONMENT MATTERS: LIGHTING

Week by week we’ve been taking you all through the design pillars here at Refine Studios. We use these pillars as the basis for curating our client’s designs to fit their needs for their space! No two clients are the same and everything from the people, flow, sound, lighting, and much more impact a space. Using these ten pillars as the guidelines really ensures that we are transforming a house into a home for our clients so that they’ll be excited to walk in the door. Today we’re sharing all about our lighting design pillar.

Lighting can make or break a room. It sets the mood and intention for the space. Whether we are going for light and bright or moody and cozy, both the natural light and light fixture selections play a large role in achieving that feel.

We first address lighting when it comes to the floor plan and window order. We love natural light and want each room to have as much of it as possible. Floor to ceiling windows in the main areas let the bright morning sun energize the space and the golden glow of evening create a relaxing vibe. Natural light brightens up the color palette and keeps darker color selections from becoming overpowering.

We circle back to lighting when we do our light fixture selections. Light fixtures take each space to the next level but can also help a space’s functionality. We love large, oversize lighting to create a focal point and soft glow in main areas of the home. Using task lighting (think art lights, well placed sconces or flush mounts, and even stairwell lighting) can brighten up dark corners or highlight design features. We then add in another layer by adding table lamps and floor lamps to soften the glow and keep things subdued without having to turn on a slew of brighter can lights.

HOW WE USE LIGHTING TO IMPROVE OUR SPACE

Charity Scott | Owner + Designer:

Of course I love all the natural lighting I can get in a space but I also love some good accent lighting to use at night. Lamps and sconces are our primary sources of light in the evening. It creates the perfect ambiance for when you’re winding down at the end of the day and relaxing. Getting the right type of bulb is important too! Using bulbs that put off warm tones vs. cool is key.

Casey | Project Manager:

Give me all the natural light! Large windows and lots of sunshine really boost my mood. Our new home also has a lot of skylights and it’s everything I didn’t know I needed!

Jada | Interior Detailer:

I love me some natural light, I always have all of the curtains open! However, our apartment is mostly tucked away and shaded, so we’ve been obsessed with our Philips Hue Smart Lighting we set up. We’re able to mimic natural light, change them to any color that matches the mood of the time, put them on a timer to turn on or off, or dim them to wind down. We even set up two light bars behind our tv so that we can sync them to whatever show or movie we’re watching.

Kaitlynn | Design Assistant:

Natural light, natural light, natural light! I really love when a space feels open and airy with large open windows– especially if there’s a view!
